Kung-Fu training

Traditional martial arts with practical purpose

Adult Kung-Fu at Deep South Kung-Fu & Taiji is built around the Chang Hong system, developed by Master Chen Qinghe of Taipei, Taiwan. Chang Hong comprises Northern Shaolin Long Fist and Hong Family Fist, giving students a balanced foundation in movement, structure, power and practical application.

Classes are physical, focused and progressive. You will train stance work, footwork, forms, striking, conditioning, weapons, throwing and locking methods. The aim is not just to copy movements, but to understand how traditional Kung-Fu develops the body, sharpens attention and builds useful martial skill over time.

Each class supports three core aims of traditional Kung-Fu:

  • Self-defence: Learn practical principles of distance, timing, balance, control and response.
  • Fitness: Build strength, stamina, mobility, coordination and body awareness through disciplined training.
  • Nurturing health: Develop better posture, focus, resilience and long-term movement habits.

Northern Shaolin Long Fist

Northern Shaolin Long Fist gives the class its open, dynamic movement. Training emphasises strong stances, coordinated footwork, kicking, agile transitions and full-body power.

Students work through barehand forms and classical weapons such as staff, sabre, straight sword and spear. Over time, the style develops timing, balance, athletic movement and clear body control.

Hong Family Fist

Hong Family Fist brings a grounded Southern Kung-Fu influence to the training. It is direct, strong and practical, with an emphasis on stable stance work, close-range power and controlled technique.

The animal methods include tiger, crane, snake, leopard and dragon. These are not treated as performance ideas, but as training tools for developing structure, intent, coordination and application.
